Birding Manu road and Blanquillo 8 days is a birdwatching tour for people who wants to concentrate and see the Andean, Cloud forest, upper tropical forest and the lowland rain forest birds including the mix species flocks. The main targets on this tour are the Red and white Antpitta, Andean Cock of the rock, Golden headed Quetzal, the largest Macaws, Toucans and Aracaris, Antbirds, woodpeckers, woodcreepers, Hummingbirds, Owls and Potoos. This program is designed for birdwatchers experienced or beginners.
BIRDING MANU ROAD AND BLANQUILLO 8 DAYS ITINERARY:
DAY 1.- CUSCO TO COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE OR MANU PARADISE LODGE:
5:00 am We will pick you up from your hotel in a private bus. Our fisrt stop will be at the small lake in Huasao to look for the Yellow Crowned Night Heron. Our next stop is in Huacarpay Lake to look for the endemic birds like the Rusty fronted Canastero, Bearded Mountaineer and other wetland birds. During the trip, the bus goes via San Salvador road maximizing the possibilities for Chestnut Breasted Mountain Finch, Giant Coot, Crested Duck Creamy Crested Spinetail, White Tufted Sunbeam, Rufous Webbed Bush Tyrant Andean Hillstar and also we make a short visit to the Ninamarca’s Chullpas, these are pre-Inca cemetery. The trip will be around 13 hours approximately; the highest pass on this road is 4000 masl.
On this day, we’ll travel around over the Andes and over the famous Cloud Forest which has interesting flora and fauna like de Andean Cock of the Rock, Golden Headed and Crested Quetzals, Red and white Antpitta, Rufous Antpitta. and many mixed species flocks of Mountain Tanagers, Flowerpiercers, Bush Tanagers, Mountain Toucans and many more to see. In the late afternoon, we arrive to Cock of the Rock Lodge or Paradise Lodge rest in double rooms with private bathroom and hot shower. Both places are very good locations for their Hummingbird feeders. Night walk for owl spotting. (B,L,D)
DAY 2.- COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE OR PARADISE LODGE TO AMAZONIA LODGE:
After an early breakfast we go to see the lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock special place where the males get togheter for displaying or practicing their dance; After cheking more birds along the road we continue our trip by bus to Atalaya, stopping in the way in interesting places like Quitacalzon where we look for Ornate Flycatcher, White Bearded Manakin, Chontachaca area good spot for Black backed Tody Flycatcher,Cabani´s Spinetail, Emerald Toucanet also we make a short stop to see the place of the orchids. From Atalaya we take the boat to Amazonia Lodge with shared bathroom and hot shower. At night is possible to see Caimans. We stay at Amazonia Lodge in double rooms with share bathrooms and hot showers. At night we look for Owls. B.L.D.
DAY 3.-PARROT CLAY LICK AND MACHUWASI LAKE:
We leave very early to see the Parrot clay lick which is located twenty minutes down river from the lodge. The activity begins around 5:30 am with the Blue Headed and Yellow Crowned Parrots, also, the Blue Headed and the Chestnut fronted Macaws. The Parrots eat the clay which has minerals that helps the stomach digestion that is the reason why hundreds of Parrots, Parakeets and small Macaws come to this particular place. After the show of the Parrots, we go to Machuwasi Lake where we go on balsa raft looking Blackish Rail, Rufous sided Crake pygmy Kingfisher, the prehistoric bird call Hoatzin and the biggest rodent of the world the Capybaras. After Lunch we walk on the trails of Amazonia Lodge increasing our birding list. We stay at Amazonia Lodge in double rooms with share bathrooms and hot showers. At night we look for Owls.B.L.D.
DAY 4.- AMAZONIA LODGE TO HUMMINGBIRD LODGE IN BOCA MANU:
From Amazonia Lodge we continue our trip by motorize boat towards Boca Manu, in the way we will see interesting birds like Herons, Vultures Macaws and many Flycatchers along the banks of the alto Madre de Dios River. The night is spent at the Hummingbird Lodge with private bathroom. Optional night walk to see Owls Tarantulas, insects, frogs, snakes etc. B.L.D.
DAY 5.- HUMMINGBIRD LODGE TO MANU BIRDING LODGE:
After an early breakfast, we go birdwatching increasing our birding list. after we continue with our boat trip for approximately 2 hours. During the boat ride, we have the best options to see the famous Jaguar, Capybaras, Caimans sleeping on the beach, Herons fishing at the edge of the Madre de Dios River, Macaws, Toucans, Vultures, Eagles and other species of birds which will show up along our boat ride. After lunch, we walk through primary rain forest for 1 hour to the Tapir lick; here there is an especial observation platform to see the Tapir (Tapirus terrestris). The tapirs are usually active at night for this reason we have mosquito nets with mattress and blankets to spend the night or after an observation come back to the lodge.B.L.D.
DAY 6.- MACAW CLAY LICK CAMUNGO LAKE AND TAPIR CLAY LICK:
4:30 am. We go to the Macaw clay Lick, the trip is 40 minutes by boat and 20 minutes walking to the special observation hideaway. We have our breakfast at the hideout. The activity begins around 5:30 am with the small parrots and later the big Macaws. The Parrots eat the clay which has minerals that helps the stomach digestion that is the reason why hundreds of Parrots Parakeets and Macaws come to this particular place. After the show of the Parrots we visit the Camungo lake very good place for Purus Jacamar, Black billed Seed Finch, Sungrebe, Hoatzins, Kingfishers, Flycatchers, Giant River Otters and the impresive Observation tower which is at 42 meters on the Kapok (Ceiba) tree.
After lunch, we have another option for the Tapir lick in case we did not have luck; or explore the trails of the lodge looking for Antbirds, Manakins at their leks, Bamboo specialists like Rufous headed woodpecker Peruvian Recurvebill, Bamboo Anshrike, White cheeked Tody Flycatcher, Large headed Flatbill also we will see monkeys like Black spider Monkey, Monk Saki, Emperor and Saddle backed Tamarin. At night we chek for Owls B.L.D.
DAY 7.- COCHA BLANCO LAKE AND TOUCAN OBSERVATION TOWER:
Very early, we visit Blanco lake, We go on the catamaran looking for the Giant River Otters also this is an interesting place for nesting birds like Woodpeckers, Parakeets, cocoi Herons, Hoatzins, Snail Kite, the elusive Agami Heron, Brown throated three toed Sloth, red howler Monkey, squirrel Monkey, white fronted Capuchin, brown Capuchin and other species that inhabit this lake.
After lunch, we visit the Toucan observation Tower we will climb on the 31 meters tower, this is a very good place for the marvelous Toucans like White throated and Channel billed Toucans, Curl crested Aracari, White bellied Parrots, Amazonian pygmy Owl, Red billed Pied Tanager, White browed Purpletuft and canopy mixed species flocks. Return to the lodge and have another option for the tapir in case we did not have luck the night before or look for Owls at night. The night we spend at Maquisapayoj Lodge.B.L.D.
DAY 8.- MAQUISAPAYOJ TO CUSCO OR LIMA:
Early in the morning we start with our return trip to Cusco, first by boat to Colorado village and then by car to Puerto Carlos. After crossing the Inambari River we take our private bus to Cusco, we will be arriving around 19:00 hours and leave you at your hotel. For the people who wants to fly, from Puerto Carlos we take them by another car 2.30 hours to Puerto Maldonado airport and take the last flight arriving to Lima at around 18:00 hours. Transfer from the airport to your hotel and dinner by your own. B.
